As one of the four pillars of Broadstone Middle School, Preparation for Work is central to how we prepare pupils for life beyond school. We believe that careers education should extend beyond individual careers events, giving pupils regular opportunities to discover future possibilities, meet people from the world of work, practise employability skills and access high-quality careers information, advice and guidance.
These opportunities are woven throughout school life, through curriculum subjects, UBC (University Broadstone Curriculum), dedicated careers experiences and pupil responsibilities including the Senior Student Leadership Team, School Council and PAV Project, alongside many other opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork and responsibility.
Our careers provision is informed by the Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Career Guidance and aims to raise aspirations, broaden pupils’ understanding of the opportunities available to them and ensure that every pupil is supported to explore pathways that reflect their individual strengths, interests and needs. The Gatsby Benchmarks are the framework used for careers guidance in England, and the updated benchmarks have been incorporated into government guidance.
We also recognise the important role that parents and carers, employers, education and training providers and our wider community play in helping young people understand the opportunities available to them. By working together, we aim for pupils to leave Broadstone with growing confidence, curiosity and ambition, equipped with the knowledge and transferable skills they need to take their next steps.
Students
Be curious about your future. Take advantage of the careers opportunities available to you at Broadstone by asking questions, getting involved and being willing to explore careers and pathways you may not have considered before. Think about your strengths, interests and the skills you are developing both inside and outside the classroom. Make the most of opportunities to meet employers, practise employability skills, take on responsibilities and learn from new experiences. You do not need to know what you want to do yet. Careers education is about discovering possibilities and developing the skills and confidence that will help you in the future.
We welcome any parent/carer, further education provider and employer to contact us to discuss what you can offer for our students and how we can best accommodate your support. Example activities include: BMS Careers Fair, Career Talk and Mock Interviews.
The Career Lead is Mrs Smith, who can be contacted via email: c.smith.st@bmsweb.co.uk or via telephone on 01202 696121.

Parents
Talk about careers and future possibilities at home. Parents and carers have an important role in helping young people develop aspirations and understand the wide range of opportunities available to them. Encourage your child to talk about their interests, strengths and experiences, and help them to explore different careers, education and training pathways with an open mind. You can also support our careers programme by sharing your own experience of work, volunteering at careers events, introducing us to employers or organisations, or simply starting conversations about the world of work at home.

Employers
Help us bring the world of work to life. Encounters with employers and people from different occupations give our pupils valuable insight into the opportunities available to them and help them understand what working life is really like. There are many ways you can support Broadstone, from attending our Careers Fair or Careers Speed Dating, talking to pupils about your career journey, supporting mock interviews, offering workplace experiences, setting a real-world challenge or sharing how curriculum subjects and employability skills are used in your organisation. Whether you can offer an hour, an afternoon or an ongoing partnership, we would love to hear from businesses, employers and individuals who can help broaden our pupils’ horizons.
